Blind Stitch Machine

March 5, 2010

Look what I found while browsing Craigslist Arts&Crafts section.  A sewing machine that is specifically made to do only a blind stitch!  I didn’t even know this kind of thing existed!  What a breeze hemming would be on this machine.

It’s called a U.S. Blind Stitch 718-2 and it was used for commercial sewing and tailoring.  Obviously an industrial, it looks like something out of a war time factory movie, doesn’t it?  I did a bit of research and came across the official U.S. Blindstitch website.  The company makes over 50 different specialty machines to do every step in the process of making men’s and women’s clothing.

I realize that commercially made clothes are generally made using a bunch of different machines made specifically for each step, but for a home sewer, doesn’t it kind of blow your mind that there are a ton of different machines that go into making a single garment and you’re crouched over a table, making your pair of pants on one single machine?  Crazy.  Imagine owning every single machine needed to make a pair of pants?  What an ordeal, but I wonder how quickly you’d be able to get them done.  You’d definitely have one professional-looking pair of pants.
